Does Emmanuel Insurance sell vacation coverage?

We do not provide specific 'vacation coverage.' Your homeowner's policy may provide some coverage, depending on what you are looking for. If you're looking for coverage to cover the expense of the trip, should you have to cancel, then you should purchase this insurance separately from your travel agent or website you book the trip through.

Who needs to carry personal umbrella insurance?

Umbrella insurance isn't just for the rich and famous. Whether it is a serious at-fault auto accident or an incident on your property, you can quickly find yourself responsible for damages that exceed the limits on your auto, homeowners, renters or boat policy. An expensive judegment is the last thing you want to worry about. An umbrella policy can help protect your assests, future wages, and provide additional insurance protection for those catastrophic liability claims.

It is highly recommended that you carry an umbrella policy if you:

  1. Have a youthful driver on your policy;
  2. Have a rental property;
  3. Serve as a volunteer on any boards;
  4. Own a dog;
  5. Have a swimming pool;
  6. Have a long commute/drive in rush hour traffic;
  7. Have guests over frequently.

Why do my rates increase?

This age old question typically is never addressed with a simple answer or any real explanation.There are many factors contributing to rate increases that often don't involve the insured directly.The stock market, recent year's storms and weather patterns, large losses experienced by the carrier regionally or nationally, mergers & acquisitions, marketing, over head and all the real business considerations it takes to operate an insurance carrier may affect your rate. Your rate is also affected by your own losses and experience. Understanding the economics of insurance will shed some light as to the why, though most of the time it rarely makes us feel any better or allows us to justify why the carrier is doing it to YOU, when you haven't done anything to them.

Do I need to buy insurance from the rental car company if I have my own personal automobile insurance?

Liability protection you carry for personal injury and property damage will provide some protection while you are driving the rental car. Damage to the rental car would be covered under Collision and Comprehensive Coverage, if your policy has it. The rental car company may also try to recover damages for loss of use while the rental car is out of service. Meaning  every day the car is not able to be rented out, they will charge the daily rate to you. Your auto policy may or may not protect you against this claim; the best way to know is to look at your policy or ask us to review it for you. Credit card companies may provide protection against these kinds of rental car claims so you should check there to see what the provisions and restrictions might be.

Finally, you can purchase a Collision Damage Waiver - CDW - from the rental car company. This isn't actually insurance but a release from financial liability you might otherwise be charged with as a result of damaging the rental car. The CDW ranges from $8 to $20 a day. Still, if you do not have protection via your auto policy or credit card, paying the CDW over a few days may be preferable than being personally accountable for $15,000-$20,000 or more to replace the rental car.

If I rent a car or truck am I protected against loss by my business auto policy?

That depends. A business auto policy by itself won't extend protection to rented autos unless you have amended it. You can get protection for situations where you rent autos if you add Hired Auto Liability and Physical Damage coverage.

If I rent a car will my personal auto insurance cover me domestically and internationally?

Almost all carriers will provide rental car coverage in the US, its territories and Canada. It is always recommended to purchase the insurance that is offered by the rental car company for three main reasons:

  1. If there is an accident, you will not be rated on your current policy or be subject to any deductibles.
  2. Many carriers do not provide loss of use, which means if the rental car is involved in an accident, the rental company will charge you for each day the car is unable to be rented out due to accident repairs.
  3. If there is a total loss, some carriers will only pay up to the total value of the car you currently have your policy.

Plesase contact us so you have no questions about your coverage and to know exactly what your policy covers.

  • Some insurance carriers will provide liability coverage only
  • Some insurance carriers provide no coverage

It is highly recommended that you always buy the insurance when renting a moving truck. Please contact us if you are unsure what your carrier provides coverage for when it comes to renting a moving truck.

What happens after I file a claim?

The claim process has a few variations but these are the essential steps once the claim has been submitted to the insurance company:

  1. You will be contacted by an insurance company adjuster to gather detailed information about your claim.
  2. Often, someone from the insurance company will inspect your auto or property for damage or will ask you to provide evidence of value and ownership for loss to property other than a vehicle or real property.
  3. An estimate is prepared.
  4. A check is delivered.
  5. Sometimes differences in actual and estimated damages arise, especially after repair work has been undertaken. Every attempt is made to resolve these differences and sometimes a supplemental check is prepared.

It is the responsibility of the insurance company to settle and pay your claim and the responsibility of our agency to make sure that is done as quickly and fairly as possible with a minimum of uncertainty and bother for you. We monitor claim progress closely and communicate with you throughout to make sure you are satisfied.

What happens if I cause a car accident?

If you own, lease (long term), or finance your vehicle then you will file a claim with your insurance company. You will have to pay any deductible amount. Payment for your loss will include payment to the finance or leasing company, if any. If you cause damage to other vehicles or property, your insurance company will handle with little or no involvement on your part, in most cases.

What if another driver hits my car?

In most cases the other driver's insurance policy would respond and reimburse you for damages to your vehicle or property. In some cases, as when the other driver has inadequate or no insurance, coverage from your own policy may apply (Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Coverage).

What steps do I need to take if I am involved in an auto accident and the accident is not my fault?

Call Emmanuel Insurance!

We will guide you through the process of getting the claim placed under the insurance carrier of the person who hit you. Make sure you get the insurance information directly from the person who hit you. If you wait for a police report it can take longer and you will, in most cases, have to pay for the report. It is important to have your "Not at Fault" claims put on the insurance of the person who hit you.

If you are injured then your carrier will have to be notified.

When do I need to put my driving-age child on my auto policy?

Once a driver has their license they are to be listed on the auto policy as an insured. Insurance carriers require all household members to be listed on the auto policy.

Adding a youthful driver to a policy can create a large increase. We are more than happy to run a quote when your child has gotten their permit so you can prepare for what is ahead when they pass the test. Additionally, working with Emmanuel Insurance as your dedicated agent, we are able to work with you and assign your youthful driver to the car on the policy which creates the least impact on your premium.

We also want to make sure that all applicable discounts are applied to your policy. The Good Student Discount is the big one! Start the conversation with your kids early; they need to maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA as a full time student (up to the age of 22) to earn this discount. Just let your children know, Bad Grades= No Car :) There is also a discount for taking an in class or behind the wheel training, this is counted as one credit and will be applied for either option. Once your child is away at college, there is an additional discount that can be applied if they are away at school over 100 miles with no car. The rating changes as the majority of the year your child does not have access to the car. They are still covered at anytime driving the car, it is understood the availability to the car is limited, which is what generates a discount.

Ask a Question | Top of Page | Link to this faq

Will filing an auto claim cause my policy to be canceled?

Generally the answer is no. One claim is not a cause for concern on the part of insurance companies. But a pattern of claims may result in a premium increase or cancellation. So if you have three claims in three years, for example, they will be viewed differently than having only one claim. Individual claims that are suggestive of gross negligence can also result in significant premium increase or cancellation. An example might be an auto accident accompanied by a reckless driving or driving under the influence conviction.

We work with many carriers at Emmanuel Insurance, in the event your insurance is being cancelled due to claims, we have the ability to find another carrier so there is continuous coverage. This may come at a higher premium and depending on circumstances and may require you to obtain insurance with a non-standard auto insurance carrier.

Will my automobile policy protect a friend or non-resident relative if I loan my car to them?

Your automobile policy protection is extended to anyone you grant permission to drive your car. You need to explicitly provide permission for each use of your car.

If the car is involved in an accident while a friend or non-resident relative is operating the car the damages would be covered under your automobile insurance, as you are the owner of the car. If your friend or non-resident relative is injured while driving your car they would first go to their own automobile insurance for medical payment reimbursement. If they do not have their own automobile insurance policy, then your auto policy would payout for medical payment reimbursement.

Your policy will normally adjust for differences in other state requirements if you have the required minimum coverage for your state. Personal automobile policy protection is only applicable in the United States, US territories and possessions and the provinces of Canada.

Are natural disasters such as flood, earthquakes and hurricanes covered under my homeowner policy?

Many natural disasters, such as hurricanes or tornadoes, are covered in a homeowner policy. Others, like earthquake and flood are not. Do I need a condominium policy if my condominium association has a master policy for the complex?

The association master policy is for coverage to the structure, which you don't need. However, to get protection for your own possessions and for legal liability related to your own unit, you need your own policy. Many condominium associations will assess unit owners for master policy deductibles. That's another reason why it is important to have your own policy and why it is important the coverage in your policy match up well with the association master policy, as each association has different coverage.

Does my homeowner policy cover my possessions when they are not in my house?

A standard homeowner policy provides coverage equal to 10% of the limit for Coverage C of a homeowner policy or $1,000, whichever is greater. This coverage is useful for protecting you while traveling and for other temporary situations. If you have property in excess of these amounts away from home or property kept away from your residence premises for extended periods, you should consider additional protection.

What does water back-up coverage entail?

Are you aware damage to your home caused by a back-up through a sewer or drain may not be covered under your current policy?

Back-up of Sewers and Drains provides coverage for your dwelling and contents in the event you have a water back-up through a sewer or drain pipe.  Example:  The sewer backs-up through your drain pipe, releasing water into your home which damages your flooring, furniture, clothing and children's toys.  The damage would be covered up to the purchased limit, less your deductible, and subject to all other policy provisions.  It is also very important to understand this is the only coverage that will act on your behalf for any damage to property in a basement.  If water damage occurs because a sump pump fails, and you don't have water back-up, then the damage that occurs to your flooring, furniture, electronics, dry-wall and anything else that might be of value will not be covered without the additional coverage added into your policy. This coverage will not pay to fix the damaged pipes, hot water heater, sump pump, etc.

Every Emmanuel Insurance client has water back-up coverage as needed. We see the value in this coverage and take every step to maintain you have adequate coverage in place.

Why do I have to insure my home for Replacement Cost?

Standard insurance carriers require homes to be insured to 100% of the replacement cost. The market value of your home or land is not considered in the insurance contract. Homes built prior to 1943 will be much more expensive to rebuild, as the materials used pre-1943 are much different than materials used post 1943.

To illustrate: A 4000 sq. ft. home located on beach front property in Miami may be valued at close to a million dollars on the market, while that same home located in Cornfield, Nebraska might be worth $250,000 on the open market. If both of the homes burned down, the cost to re-build either, assuming the same materials are used, would be very similar. This illustrates the difference of replacement cost versus market value and why the insurance carrier is more focused on the amount it costs to rebuild a home than what it can be bought and sold for.

I'm not near any body of water. Is there any particular reason why I would need flood insurance? Doesn't my homeowner policy provide flood coverage?

Homeowner policies specifically exclude reimbursement for damage caused by flood. Your home may be a significant distance from a major body of water but still be exposed to flood risk if your home was built in a flood plain. The National Flood Insurance Program has a flood risk indicator on their website. All you have to do is enter your property address and you will get an indication of the degree of flood risk you face. Our agency can get flood coverage for you. For an indication of the cost, the National Flood Insurance Site also has a 'quick quote' table of premiums to give you an idea.

What are the benefits of a renters policy?

Renters policies provide several benefits. A renters policy will provide compensation for many types of loss to your personal property. Renters policies also include liability protection. This can be especially important because a fire, caused by your negligence, could damage a large number of other rental units and the property contained in them. Liability coverage will normally cover your legal obligations to compensate other parties in cases like this as well as for other instances where you are legally liable for damage of loss.

Will my roommate's renters policy cover me as well?

Typical policies provide coverage for you and relatives that live with you. So, if your roommate is not a relative you will not be protected under his or her policy. Renters policies are very affordable, starting at not much more than $150 a year and they provide liability protection as well as coverage for your personal possessions.

What kind of insurance does my business need?

This depends on the kind of business you engage in. All businesses need basic liability to protect them against acts of owners or employees for which the business might be considered legally liable. Professional service providers often need special liability protection. Examples might be professional liability protection for lawyers, doctors, architects or software designers. Another example are businesses that manufacture or distribute a product; they typically need product liability protection. It's always a good idea to review the kinds of liability exposures your business might have when updating or initiating an insurance program.

Businesses that own autos or use non-owned autos in the conduct of their business will probably need a business auto policy.

All businesses have property which can be divided up into several categories: office or other equipment, inventory, real property, etc. and it is a good idea to think about your ability to replace any damaged or lost property in these categories. If the possible amount of loss exceeds your comfort level then insurance might be a good alternative.
You also need to think about how long you could afford to be out of business. Insurance, known as business interruption insurance, can pay suppliers, salaries and other costs you might incur even if your business income were to be interrupted by a covered cause of loss.
